Graduate Developer Program Anylytical Technologies in association with Grassroot Nation is hosting a Graduate Developer Program. The program is aimed at graduates with little to no work experience. It is open to graduates who seek to pursue a career in Software Engineering. We are looking for graduates who are eager to be challenged! About Grassroot Grassroot’s vision is a nation self-organizing from the ground up. Grassroot’s mission is to create mobile solutions for men and women who seek to organize their neighbours in low-income communities in South Africa. In doing so, Grassroot hopes to give new life to the Freedom Charter’s first and foremost demand: The People Shall Govern. Since early 2016, Grassroot has deployed a set of mobile tools that have now reached almost twenty thousand people. Those tools make it easier for ordinary people to call meetings, record decisions and take votes. Grassroot has built deep partnerships with half a dozen bottom-up social movements, and are particularly active in the Greater Soweto area. Grassroot’s team and their board consists of senior professionals with backgrounds in software, government, institutional reform, and finance, at the DTI, the World Bank, McKinsey & Company, ThoughtWorks, and elsewhere. We are particularly strong at understanding our client’s requirements and making these a reality, whether it is the design and build of new system, speeding up delivery of corporate IT projects or enhancing existing business applications. Graduate Software Developer The Development team currently requires additional strength; While the bulk of the Grassroot Platform development is complete, both on the backend, Web application and the Android App, we have an ongoing stream of additional improvements, bug fixes, and UI tweaks. We will also be integrating to the Platform cloud-based services for visual and text processing, and machine learning. We are therefore looking for support from a Graduate Developer, on a full-time basis. The developer would work on both the server side (Java/Spring) and client (Android native), under supervision of the Project Technical Lead. This role will provide an exceptional learning opportunity, deploying new technology at a rapid pace, in a small team with passion and integrity, tasked to support your growth. Key Tasks Clear backlog issues in the Grassroot Platform (Java/Spring), client (Android native), Web Application (Spring MVC & Thymeleaf) Help integrate the Platform with cloud-based Microservice APIs (e.g. Twilio, AWS Lambda and other services) Build Services and UI adjustments, following additions/modifications in core Data Model designed by Senior Developers. Over time, begin working on more complex issues, with a goal to being able to implement pieces of functionality. Required experience Some experience in Java, or a cognate language (Object Oriented, strongly typed), required. Familiarity with one or more of Android native, Thymeleaf, or common JavaScript frameworks, preferred. Demonstrated ability to learn rapidly, including proficiency in Stack Overflow searching, and familiarity with common logging and debugging techniques. Demonstrated ability to work in a team, including proficiency with Git, GitHub, test-commit-deployment flows, issue boards, etc. Preference for some familiarity or at least knowledge of REST APIs.
